Hello,

I own a 7950 and I'm planning to buy a Yamaha AV receiver. I will connect my pc to the receiver with an HDMI cable and then connect my monitor to the receiver separetly and sound will be outputted to B&W speakers.

If I do this, will I get the maximum sound quality possible? Will the card output raw data and then the av receiver decodes it or will the 7950 decode the data before outputting it?

Your best sound quality would be the SPID out of either your onboard sound card or a discrete sound card.  As I understand it, the optical out (SPID) does not convert the sound at all, but travels over a fiber optic cable, so there is no degredation or potential EMF interference.
