Graphics Card XFX Double D Radeon 7950
AMD Catalyst Driver Version, and Driver History 12.10, upgraded a couple weeks ago from 12.4
Operating System 64-bit Windows 7
Issue Details 2 issues:
-issue 1: when monitor goes to sleep, monitor doesn't turn off--backlight stays on. only started happening since updating from catalyst 12.4 to 12.10. again, the display turns off, but the backlight stays on with a cursor on the screen.
-issue 2: random restarts. no warning at all, just a system reboot. happens randomly when surfing the web, playing a game, working in MS word, etc. does not appear to be caused by anything. has happened ONLY since installing the card (only system change that was made). I haven't tried changing out the power supply yet, but I doubt that's the issue as it started once I installed the new 7950.

I just updated the chipset drivers. I think they were up to date (as the last release for the mobo was apparently 2010), but I wasn't sure so I updated them anyway. I'll post again if I'm still having problems. Thank you for the suggestion.

I'm still having issues with the monitor not turning off, although I haven't had a random crash yet. *crosses fingers*

Why did you update your drivers? Were you having problems before you up dated the drivers? Or the updated drivers were there and updated for the hell of it. Like I tell people all the time don't fix what isn't broke. Yes if you are having problems than try the newer driver. If it didn't work go back to the driver that was working.

I was having issues with random restarts prior to the driver update. I was trying to fix the random restart issue. As the new video card was the only thing that changed, I figured updating the video drivers was a reasonable course of action.

Have you tried to put back in the old card and see if that takes care of the problem. There could be something wrong with the new card.

One other thing here is that board doesn't support 3.0 cards. Yes the card should be backward compatible and should work. I myself won't put a 3.0 card into a 2.0 board.

So I have gotten windbg and read the memory dumps from the crashes, and they all indicate dxgmms1.sys as the likely culprit. The default_bucket_ID is "WIN7_Driver_Fault" so I'm assuming that it's driver related, although I don't have much experience with memory dumps. A quick google search of dxgmms1.sys does seem to indicate driver issues related to directx, but I'm out of my element. Can anybody shed some light on this? I'm at my wits end here.
Also, to respond to dmdilks previous response: the old card died, so trying it isn't an option.

Did you purge all the old drivers with a program like driver sweeper? You might wanna try reinstalling directx again also. This new drivers for 7 series cards seem to have all kinds od issues. You should reinstall 12.4 until they fix problems.

I have tried driver sweeper, but I updated to 12.10 in an attempt to fix the problems I was seeing with 12.4 (the restarts were happening then too), so reinstalling 12.4 won't help.
