I'm new here and I really don't have time to read the forum rules, I hope I'm not doing anything wrong.

Anyway, I have one HD 7890 and HD 5870 and I wanna Crossfire them...

Someone knows if thats possible or recommended ?

Yep... by a lot, although it's hard to tell with the whacko model numbers everyone uses these days.

Keep the 7890, and either sell the 5870, or put it in another rig.  It can still hold it's own most of the time... it just isn't as fast as the 7890.

HD 7890 (7870 XT) - 2841.6 - 2995.2 GFLOPS SP power

So roughly the same on-paper power, but GCN is more efficient than VLIW5.

MIPS = Meaningless Indication of Processor Speed. 

MIPS and FLOPS have a long and terrible history of being misused since it's often extremely difficult to get a meaningful comparison across different systems.  That's just one example.  Two chips can have very similar values for MIPS or FLOPS, and yet one can beat the pants off of another.

Partially in response to that, the linux kernel computes a measure called "BogoMips" at every boot.  It's often defined as the number of million times per second a processor can do absolutely nothing.  Figuring out how many bogoMips a chip is capable of actually does have a real purpose, but as a user you can't actually use it for anything.

Better than taking two cards and running them through, say, Haven or 3DMark. Measuring the FLOPS capabilities is an at-a-glance quick comparison of the power of the cards the same way Linpack does for HPC systems. How programs put that power to use, however, varies considerably as we all know.

All benchmarks suck, in one way or another.  Some suck more than others.

The thing is... running "programs" is what hardware is designed to do.  Running away into an ivory tower and cooking up magic numbers... not so much.

AMD has a chart on there website for crossfire compatabilty. Pretty simple though,first 2 numbers should be the same looks like.
