I have purchased a Radeon HD7770 Ghz edition a few weeks ago, and have found that whilst playing demamding games like Far Cry 3, the FPS is attrocious. A friend came over, who seemed to think it was the driver. Is there any other issues it could be?

Well according to this, if you turn the graphics up. Looks like your going to get pretty low FPS.

Yeah Far Cry 3 is pretty demanding, it takes a 7970 to really max it, you should look into tweak guides to get some extra fps with no visual loss and aim for high settings (not ultra)
