Graphics Card
ATI Radeon HD 7970 Sapphire OC Vapor-X 3Go

AMD Catalyst Driver Version, and Driver History
Catalyst Control Center Version 2012.1219.1521.27485

Operating System
Win 7 64-bit Home, everything up to date

Issue Details
On "FarCry 3" game the shadows looks weird, whereas a friend of mine having nearly the same computer with a Radeon 7950 have nice ones.

The shadows look like that with any settings, except that the most high the shadows setting is, the smaller are the distance between the shadows's strings. (see pictures)
Vsync or AntiAliasing doesn't change anything...

The most flagrant is on cars, so I took a few pictures of how the shadows look like with different angles :

Motherboard or System Make & Model
MSI Z77A-G45

Power Supply

Antec High Current Gamer Series, 620 W

Display Device(s) and Connection(s) Used
24" Iiyama ProLite B2409HDS-B1. Connected with DVI cable.

46" Philips PFL7605H/12. Connected with HDMI.

Applications and Games

The shadows flicker a little on Fallout 3 and Oblivion, but on FarCry it is really flagrant.

CPU Details
Intel Core x4 i5-3570K (3.4 GHz)

Motherboard BIOS Version
MSI BIOS E7752IMS v.2.90

System Memory Type & Amount
Kit Dual Channel DDR3 Corsair Vengeance Low Profile, 2 x 4 Go, PC3-12800, CAS 9

Additional Hardware

1 x SSD Samsung Série 830, 128 Go, SATA III

(Windows and The Farcry 3 game are on it)

Additional Details
Deep Antivirus scan
, drivers up to date, clean Windows, with only what is used installed, controled launched applications on startup.

Tried a lot of settings in FarCry 3 to optimize performances but I've always seen shadows like this.

Your images are way too zoomed in. I can't even tell what they illustrate, not to mention deciding what is a shadow and what is something else. It may just be me though.

Well, like I said it's easier to see it on cars as you can rotate it as you want...

This is what you see :

These images look the same as they do on my 7970 given the proper light angle etc. No game engine is perfect, minor flaws are expected. There are more serious visual glitches to be found, like some caves and rocks with extremely overstretched textures.

Then, it's a problem with 7970 Video Cards because it's what I own too, and a friend of mine has perfect shadows with a 7950 card...  (I've tested myself at his home)

I also have problems with shadows in Oblivion, as you can see on Uriel Septim's Face :

Oblivion has always be like this. Self shadows are ugly and useless for anyone with any card. No one ever turns them on for this very reason. If you google around, you'll see.

I wonder if it's just your friend bragging or having a worse monitor on which details cannot be seen well.

Oh, ok, thank you, I didn't Googled it 'cause I just saw it, talking about it with a friend...

But it doesn't solve my problem with Farcry...

Hey yOLAs*

I too have those exact same shadows. In the exact same places. I have two MATRIX5870P in crossfire so it is not exclusive to the 7000 series card. It is like zipsi said, "No game engine is perfect." And no game is perfect for that matter. I read somewhere that they will be releasing patch 1.05. When? I have no idea. I use radeonPRO (the most recent beta) with SMAA SweetFX to control everything for that game. It doesn't quite fix the shadows, but you can get great IQ and performance out that tool. I recommend it.

I just wish this issue will arrive to developpers ears and that they will fix it, or at least I wish they are aware of this problem...

No such problem for my card and I doubt it's a game issue .. more like a card or low resolution issue - try ultra mode.

I am in ultra mode and I've always been.

The only person who has this problem is a 7970 owner, too, so it seems to be a card issue.
