I'm needing to replace a dying GPU in an older machine, but wanted to nail down the compatibility stuff before I make a purchase.

It still runs WinXP pro SP3, and we can't afford to upgrade that in addition to a new GPU.  I'm looking to replace a Geforce GTX 280 with a Radeon HD 7770.  There was some info on the AMD site about XP not being supported anymore, but only because of certain features (CF, multi-monitor support), but some other threads seem to show that these cards can work in XP anyway.  As long as I'm not planning on a CF config and only use 1 monitor, is this card compatible with WinXP?

Also worth noting is that the motherboard (MSI X48 Platinum) uses PCIe x16 (1.0 or 1.1, don't remember).  Now I was reasonably sure that PCIe slots are forward compatible, and I could slot a PCIe 2.0 or 3.0 card in there.  Is this assessment correct?  I'm aware that I may have issues anyway putting a 3.0 card into a 1.0 slot, but I'm low on options as far as replacement cards go.

If some of you in the know could chine in on these questions, I'd appreciate it.  I'm looking to make a purchase by the end of the weekend and hope to be more sure of my purchase by then.

PCIe is backwards compatible, however putting a card as new as the HD 7000 series, or its nVidia counterpart, could rarely result in issues. Personally I wouldn't do it myself, instead I'd wait until I could update the whole system, but it is "compatible" with XP.

Would getting an older card on clearance be a better idea?  How far back should I consider going?

I'm wanting a card that is roughly performance-equivalent to a GTX 280, so that is a factor.

The GTX 280 has 933 GFLOPS of power, so equivalent power would be the HD 4770 (legacy), HD 5750, HD 6770, and HD 7770. You could go ahead and go with the 7770 and there might not be any issues, but if you can find a 4770 or 4870 cheap on ebay, it'd be a nice deal.
