I've just bought an AMD HD5450 graphics card, with a Dell U2412M 1920 x 1200 resolution monitor, and Windows 7.

If I try to adjust the monitor's resolution, I can only go as high as 1600x1200.  I started using this new hardware combination with a 15-pin VGA cable, but then I bought an HDMI to DP cable, thinking that would solve this problem.  It hasn't.

Any ideas please?  Thanks a lot.

Edit:  I pressed a button on my monitor to change the input source.  I selected DP rather than VGA, but the screen just went blank.  (I had to change the source back to VGA again, to see the Windows desktop.)  I currently have both VGA and HDMI+DP cables connected.

Edit 2:  I downloaded a monitor ".inf file" from Dell, and when installing it, it allows a choice of 4 sub-types for my Dell monitor.  I'm not too sure which one to pick.  (If I install one, the chosen sub-type is correctly displayed inside W7's Device Manager for the monitor.)

Inside the AMD HD5450 catalyst control panel, I cannot change to any resolution other than 1024x768.  (I made a mistake in my original post, saying that I could not go beyond 1600x1200.)  At the Windows 7 desktop however, I am able to change the monitor's resolution, but not beyond 1600x1200.
