Long story short;  /\/ope!

Minimum, two refferance cards the same, best if two cards from same company.

*Some* of the newer cards of same family can. Like integrated vid with discrete of same family.

48oo and 78oo long way apart, like 3rd cousins.

Phenom ][ 965, Gigabyte 790fx ud5, Saphire AMD 7970 Ghz, 4gig OCZ 1066, Eyefinity 3x ASUS vw266 (1920x1200x3), OCZ Vertex boot, assorted others.  Asus Xonar DSX > 5.1 ~700w Sony  :)

As BatCat said, you CANNOT Crossfire the two.

They are COMPLETELY different chips from completely different generations.

You can only Crossfire a HD 4870 with cards that are also HD 48xx

(a) another 4870  (b) a HD 4870X2 (c) Radeon HD 4850 (d) Radoen HD 4890 (e) radoen HD 4830

Same rule applies to the HD 7870.

(a) Another HD 7870 (b) HD 7850

Crossfire Compatibility Chart:

FX-8350 @ 4.8GHz // ASUS Crosshair V Formula 990FX // Sapphire Vapor-X HD 7970 + Dual-X HD 7970 // Thermaltake Frio w/ push-pull (using Antec Formula 7 Nano-Diamond + Cooler Master JetFlo fans) // 8GB (2 X 4GB) G.Skill RipJawsX 2133MHz  // Corsair TX850 850W // Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD (OS) // Kingston V200+ 120GB SSD // WD Caviar Black 1TB // Windows 7 Ult x64
