I have two AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series graphics cards using driver version 12.104 on a Windows 7-64bit computer. The motherboard is a Crosshair IV Formula.

For longer than I can remember the unused graphics card will at completely random times have its' fan speed jump to full.

Usually I restart the computer, put it to sleep and wake it up, or shut it down and turn it back on, and the problem will be gone.

Now, however, when the fan jumps the computer will freeze/crash, and it has started to fail to boot.

I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them using the tool provided by the website, but it just happened again.

How can his be fixed? How do I know both cards are in use? What is wrong here?

Thanks
