ISSUE DETAILS:

 

System crashes when playing any movie or game randomly. Used to be infrequent but after upgrading to 8.1 it is very frequent.

Civ 5 crashes after playing for a while and fan speed goes very high.

Frequency increased after upgrade to Win 8.1 and now cannot play movies in MEdia playeror even in browser.

I'm going to assume your HP system came with Windows 7 which you upgraded to Windows 8. You now upgraded to Windows 8.1.

I would suggest you do a Refresh for Windows. Doing it form 8.1 will result in a clean copy of Windows 8. Do a Windows update, followed by installing all your software. Starting with 13.9 WHQL CCC package. After all your software is re-installed, then upgrade to Windows 8.1 package.
