There is a huge problem with the new 290 and 290x cards.

I bought a new 290x bundled with BF4 because i like it.
From day 1 on i only have trouble with this card.

It is giving me randomly black screens, and no its not my system.
Its a very known issue and reports are on all kind of forums but no one seems to know what the problem is, i found myself some fixes but later on they seem to be false and the issue comes back again. (so no fix)

Before i bought this card i had 0.0% issues with my system my 7970 and backup GTX680 work like a charm on BF4 and any other game i own.

I though that the problem with the 290x was that it was getting 95 degrees but it isnt, i bought myself some watercooling and noticed the temps were awesome but it didnt solve the problem.

I aswell tried another powersupply plugged it on the 290x alone wich was 950w, i though maybe my 800w psu wasnt enough. This didnt fix the problem either.

People with 290 and 290x are having this issue:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?287836-R9-290x-290-Black-Screen-issues (last 20 seconds)

This happens to me and tons of other people are have stock/watercooling, its not a temp issue its not a power issue its an issue with a card who cost 500$ and we get no respond, no one is telling us anything!!

and many many more @ google.
To see if it was somekind of voltage problem i flashed the card to an custom rom and changed voltages, no this didnt solve it either.

Right now iam on stock values again and running the card in Uber modus it its still happening, why isnt amd telling its customers whats happening?

Why is no one telling us whats really going on its been for 3/4 weeks allready, you cant ignore us!

Yes i tried beta 6, yes i tried beta 8, yes i tried beta 9!

I have an 2600k, z77 mainboard, 8Gb of ram, 180GB ssd,800W psu and a 500$ card 290x on wich i cant play a single game!!

Fix this problem!

Yes, I bought sapphire r9 290x(Elpdia gddr5) and for first day I already had 3 black screens, my previous card was 6990 and I had no issues but this is starting to be sad. I am preparing to rma my card but if I receive same one with same memory and issue continues? People on forums think this is either memory related, pwm related or bios....

1st black screen occured during watching youtube video in full screen but it wasnt the catalyst crash that many associate with hardware acceleration in adobe flash.... it was black screen for few seconds followed by hard reset.

2nd black screen occured after booting the pc and right away 290x emit coil whine noise and I noticed temps were shooting up gpu load at 100% even though nothing was running.... 5 seconds later before I coule even react black screen for few seconds followed by hard reset.

3rd black screen occured while furmark test.

Oh and I dont OC my card at all... I have to RMA but I wish I could wait before I receive another card or get a refund cause if next card has same issue then I will be wasting a lot of money shipping it back(I have to ship it between canada and usa).

Another thing I noticed, on newegg 8 out of 36 people who posted reviews of their orders for sapphire 290x r9 have bsod/black screen issues.

I noticed one said he was lucky his memory was hynix and he didnt post about having any issues.

Nobody should be buying these cards and for sure i will tell anybody who ask's me.
I would like to hear AMD say ok we know something is wrong and were trying to adress the issue but no, just like the grey bsod issue on the 5xxx series we wont hear a thing i guess!

I wonder what they think if everybody is returning the cards and they are like WTF is this ? maybe they should listen to their customers and look around on the web!

Ye are not alone i have the same problem been trying to fix it for days. Be playing battlefied 4 and all of a sudden the screen goes black and my computer locks up. The only think i can do is unplug the power and restart again.

At first thought it was the game cos BF4 has bugs. But it also happens on BF3, Metro last light, Payday 2, and Star Citizen hanger module.I hope its just a driver problem.

They should let us know the are working on a fix.

This is (still) putting me and no doubt countless other people off buying this GPU.

This is occuring for me too on my new XFX R9 290, black screen and forced restart while gaming or even just browsing or watching a movie.

The details in event viewer show a fatal north bridge error ID 20.

Please dont comment if you have nothing usefull to say?
We may expect that 'out of the box' a new graphiccard works like it should.

This means:
No randomly, bsods, freezes, crashes, hard locks and so on.
That not every game works on 100fps i dont care about i just want it to run stable without black screens!

As I said in other posts, im  now in line to believe this is all a driver problem.. and not hardware, theres no way 50% or more of the 290/290x gpus are defectivie... its not not reasonable... because that would be a baaaaad thing for AMD.. so they need to come on out with drivers and get it moving

I do hope it's just the driver having issues.  However if AMD doesn't say something soon I'll have no choice but to try to get a refund and go for the 780 most likely.

I got it from newegg, yes.  Their service has been great since I'm doing a second RMA already (the 2nd one not only crashes, but also has loud coil whine).

It does have iron egg but I don't want to constantly getting BSODs for no reason (it's very annoying when you're in a game of league of legends).  I spent big dollars on a top end card so I expect it to just work at stock setup.

Trouble with that is, unless theres some sort of conspiracy over at OC.net to demonise Elpida, out of around 100 owners 37 have reported having Black screen crash's and Elpida vram whilst only one on Hynix and that was overclocking.

Maybe it really has something to do with elpida since the 2 that I had were both having elpida memory.  However it may also due to there simply are just more cards being sold with elpida memory instead of hynix.

These (quality) times are long gone not only for AMD.. hence my comment is very valid!

It's not like this is a completely new architecture though so what are they playing at?
