Reference cooler versions always have their problems with heat (like the reviews on this newegg page appear to be about), sometimes better cooling is all it takes to fix all issues. Diode temperature in this case is completely irrelevant, there are other components that can overheat and of which you can't see any sensor data.

Reference coolers are pretty much  isolated from the rest of the system. There isnt much you can do about it, it either cools itself ,or not. Of course user still needs a good cooling , but reference coolers are less efected from it.

if the problem was cooling , replacing the card wouldnt solve the problem.

The new beta drivers (14.3) seems to have more aggresive fan profile ,maybe it will solve some of the problems.

I agree with TRock, ok , not every 280/x/290/x model out there is problematic but there are a lot of people having issues with these cards. Check new egg's customer reviews. I didnt do any search before buying 280x and now I have problem with black screens! so we talk about a €300 brick. I always choose amd gpus(from 4xxx) and it is the first time I had issues like that. These things  happen ok, I can accept it, but there are many problematics card out there..a big percentage. Some did RMA and got 2 or 3 bad cards again until they get a good one...I think it is not pot luck. Maybe cheap hardware parts..elpida memories..all other parts..I dont know, I just want a WORKING CARD.

check here and see the truth: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202061

(we dont talk about performance, these cards are top)
