Hey all,

I have a Gigabyte R9 280X currently installed in my machine. A mate at work recently purchased a XFX R9 280X and wants me to test his card to make sure it isn't faulty.

Can I install the GPU without having to un-install/re-install drivers? Is there anything I should watch out for when swapping the GPUs?

Cheers.

TBH its safer if you reinstall drivers to avoid issues. The cards have different BIOSes, so it may even be required, I know I had to reinstall drivers when I flipped the BIOS switch on one of my R9 290Xs. I would go ahead and do it to be on the safe side.

I recently tried an HD5970 without reinstalling the same drivers that i use with my HD6990.

No problems at all.

But as HoneyBadger84 suggested, it doesn't hurt to be safe....

The only thing to watch out when swapping cards is to not accidentally damage the connectors and the card by static electricity. Apart from watching for dust, that is.
