I just bought a used laptop, Asus R503U. I chose that one because it said it had a Radeon 7340 video card. "Sooo much better than Intel integrated video" I think.

It doesn't take me long to realize that the AMD card is worse than Intel integrated video. XP

Why would AMD even bother making such a piece of crap?

Is there a way to upgrade to a REAL video card? Something that doesn't use system ram?

AMD Radeon HD 7340

The AMD Radeon HD 7340 (or perhaps also called ATI Mobility Radeon HD 7340) is an integrated graphics card in the 2nd generation Zacate netbook processor. It is based on the same graphics core as the Radeon HD 6320, but the base clock and the turbo boost is somewhat higher. Furthermore, it features the UVD3 video processor.

The 3D performance of the HD 7340 is about 10 percent faster than the HD 6320. Gaming performance are therefore similar to a Nvidia ION or Intel HD Graphics graphics card. In our tests the HD 6320 was only able to run low end games like Fifa 11, Sims 3 and Star Craft 2 single player in lowest detail settings fluently. More demanding games like Risen or Call of Duty series were not playable.

The UVD3 video decoder allows the decoding of HD videos using the graphics card. It allows the parallel decoding of two MPEG2, H.264 and VC-1 streams and therefore compatible to BD-Live. Furthermore, the new UVD3 also supports DivX, Xvid and MPEG4 Part 2 decoding. Blu-Ray 3D via MCV (Multiview Video Coding) is theoretically supported by the UVD3 but wasn't available in the first laptops and platforms (no hardware accelleration and no HDMI 1.4 output).

Notebookcheck

And no, there is no way to upgrade that laptop.

Link to where they said that. You can't, because AMD has thrown significant amounts of time and money behind APUs, and A8 and A10 class APUs are extremely good for laptops.

I mean AMD is not active on the smarthphone and tablet market.

And the reason was: "We are making desktop chips"

And the drivers on mobile things like Laptop are crap like ever. Like the desktop ones.

As AMD buyer we have to hope that Mantle will be supported by every device someday so we can kick out these crappy drivers.

But Mantle will not ever used by Nvidia. Thats the problem. And Nvidia is using the mobil market to get much attention at the moment and im not really know any friend who has an AMD. Only one and his card was defect too.

Im not sure if the choice to switch to AMD was good for me only because of Mantle.

Dont get me wrong. I love the idea behind Mantle.

But ive bought my first AMD and only BSODs. Thats not fair, but ive heard it before, that AMD is not a good GPU solution. So its my fault, i guess. Now i stuck with it. I will get a new one in 1-2 month / or repaired one ... but i dont think its over. AMD is a troube maker.

If you don't give links then you aren't any better than a certain forum member who yells about liquid coolers.

http://techcrunch.com/2011/08/08/why-no-amd-powered-smartphones/

"For AMD, the future largely remains in their traditional desktop, server, and notebook offerings"

Thats fine but ive hoped they could learn much on mobile chip development.

But anyway i dont like Smartphones very much in his beeing for a gamer. And this i am saying as an App Game Coder XD ... but anyway ... we are talking about laptop chips that are in the mobil are and having to deal with temperature and loudness. Big focus.

AMD chips are hungry and they getting very hot and loud. Not good for Laptops. Combined with bad drivers. .... I dont know if AMD is the right choice for laptops... (yout dont have to share my opinion)

In desktop i guess its fine, i guess, because i get much BSODs with my brand new r9 280x and my very clean and new system. So i hope .. i hope that the problem is not comming from the drivers because the card is on the way back when i get my new graphiccard (i have to buy a second one XD only to have one so that i have one in the 2 month i have to wait and get my brand (new) graphiccard back) for the days where i have my brand new graphiccard no more.

It sucks. If i had payed 4,99 so i get a replacemend in 0 sec. But i had not payed the 4,99 so i have to wait 2 months until i get my brand new graphiccard back.

I buy something, its defect and i have to waiting 2 month XD.. its like buying something and wait 2 month until its there... lol
