desktop boxes can be upgraded, mobile rigs cannot

I use mobile machines for other purposes, the desktop I use is more capable

Laptops can, in fact, be upgraded, but only if they use discrete MXM cards for graphics, and only within the same thermal envelope (since you can't ugprade the cooling, or at least not easily).

That Inspiron, however, has the GPU soldered directly onto the motherboard.

Your only upgrade path is full replacement.

even high end mobile boxes with replaceble graphics are not easily upgraded mainly due to the changes in architecture that pops up once in a while

PCI Expresss is forwards and backwards compatible. MXM has managed to hang on to some of the abilities of PCI EXpress.
