Any Catalyst version after 12.6 causes an error to occur "Failed to intialize renderer. Unknown error creating the renderer" and the Skyrim load screen remains black with the error box that I can close out. I found a fix, though I don't know if that should be used since it entails deleting two DLL files from the Skyrim folder, they are "atimgpud.dll" and "atiumdag.dll". Removing those two files allows me to play these games with later rleases than 12.6. I wonder if AMD is updating these files with their updated released as maybe that causes a conflict. In any case, I was stuck not using anything after the 12.6 release until I found this (temporary) fix and I now have 12.10.

Radeon HD 2X5870 crossfire (not overclocked)

Intel i7-950 @3.2ghz (not overclocked)

Asus Rampage II extreme MOBO

12gig (6x2gb) G-Skill 1333mhz DDR3 240pin memory

Samsung Synchmaster T240HD 24" monitor 1920x1600

1000w Silverstone PSU 6pin

Coolermaster 180w V8 heatsink

AMD removed a few dll's in later driver versions that are no longer needed, it first created some issues in some apps like MSI Afterburner and several games. So by removing those files from Skyrim directory you fixed it, cause they cause conflict with newer drivers. If you would reinstall skyrim right now, it wouldn't even recreate those files.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully when the next release of Catalyst comes out, which will be soon I'm sure, this won't be an issue. I've never seen installing Skyrim as the culprit though. Admittedly, I never paid attention to what gets installed file by file from the Skyrim install itself. I will however, look out for this and post back .

OK, thanks for this. The previous reply to mine mentioned a reinstall of Steam would not place these files back. But I wanted to be sure that they are from Skyrim/Steam and not from AMD/ATI. Case closed.

Thanks all!
