I play on submitting an issue report for this, as everything I've tried doesn't seem to solve the issue, and it seems it's the 14.6 RC Drivers that started it.

What I've tried:

Reinstalling the game from a backup I made a while ago

Reinstalling drivers with a cleaning in between to ensure no issues

Starting in safe mode (crashes to desktop with the resolution stuck at it's smaller setting until I change it back in CCC)

Anyone else have Metro 2033 & can confirm yes or no on it crashing upon start up with the 14.6 RC drivers?  Just wondering if it's the drivers in general, the drivers with R9 290Xs specifically, or which.  I played both Metro 2033 & the benchmark thereof previously with the 14.6 Betas & 14.4 WHQLs no issues.

The only other thing it could possibly be is installing Metro Last Light somehow broke 2033, but as I said, I reinstalled Metro 2033 completely to eliminate the game files as being part of the issue, so I don't think that's it.

Yes, Last Light runs 100% fine.  It's just Metro 2033 that crashed to desktop without actually loading in.

Should mention I've also tried checking the integrity of the game cache & having it get whatever files it needed...

I'm probably going to try installing it on a different drive if no one else seems to have the issue, just to rule that out as well, since I have a known-to-work previously backup of the game to restore from to anywhere I please.

Edit: Actually next thing I'm gonna do is verify it's the drivers, again, by reverting, just to be sure it works again on the 14.4s

Tried with afterburner. Some info with frame limiter (still a little tearing):

gpu1: 89% 71° C

gpu2: 89% 69° C

mem: 1530 mb

d3d11: 60 fps

ram: 2537 mb

All in-game settings maxed, 1080p.

Do you have Last Light as well, or just 2033?  I just reverted to the 14.4s & the crashing occured on first try.  Having it validate the files again & rewrite anything that needs rewriting, then I'll try again.

Hrmhrm... Wondering about the possibility of my backup being corrupt somehow, that would certainly suck since my original copy of the game is a download code AKA I have no disc & would have to redownload the whole thing on my craapy 1.5mb/s download rate internet... which would take... well, a day, probably.

Metro ran so crappy for me I uninstalled it,,,and never looked back. Last Light is a much better game. IMO, and no issues at all running it.

Yeah right now it's lookin' like Last Light may have broken my 2033 somehow... I'm trying the backup fresh install one more time, which means I have to redownload about 1.3GB of stuff (fun, that'll take me about 3hrs) just for the updates for that, then I'll try again...

And if that fails... well... guess I'll be doing it from scratch & going back to the 14.6RC drivers.

So far Last Light is decent, dunno how far through it I am, but I stopped at an annoying point where you have to be super stealthy or fight impossible odds... I liked Metro2033 even thought parts of it (like the Library) were far harder than they needed to be IMO.

Yea, it took quite a few patches and drivers to make proper use of one or two gpus.

Good story and atmosphere though.

The book is even better.

Least it's not gonna take ya half a day like it would me, literally lol

Going back to the specifics of what caused my issue, I seem to remember being running Crossfire or TriFire, can't remember which exactly, but, to the point, I ran Metro:LL's benchmark for the first time, then I went to run Metro 2033's benchmark again, for some reason, and it crashed (first time I'd ever had it crash).  From that point on, Metro2033 has refused to load. That would indicate a broken game file... but a reinstall should've fixed that then, eh?

Grrr. lol

Delete the .xml, .txt or whatever file is created when you run the benchmark.

This potentially corrupted file would not be deleted with a reinstallation, hence the problem remains.

Just a thought.

Updated my PhysX... I can't find any files the benchmarker would write.  I did delete the entire folder in my "My Games" folder, that didn't seem to change anything.

Trying one last time now that PhysX is updated even though it's not a physx crash according to the readout on the crash screen.

Success.

Followed the procedure here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14065578&postcount=10

Then updated my physx package via NVidia website, viola, benchmark launches & runs no problem... verifying the game actually works now.

Edit: Yep, good to go... so one of the things I reinstalled by following that protocol solved it... not sure which, think it was the PhysX package though.

Edit 2: 124fps average in the bench at my more moderate "everyday gaming" settings on cpu/gpu on very high/AAA, thanks for the help/coordinated testing BackFire
