My old X4-965 died and I had to buy a new system in a hurry (work reasons) as I didn't have time to build one as usually do. I found a relatively inexpensive boxed system:

Asus A88XM-PLUS FM2+ socket

A6-6400K dual core chip

Windows 7

I dropped in my 7770 2G video card .

I'm not an avid gamer but the couple of newer ones I do play have high CPU/video demands (X-Plane 10,ArmA 3) and a few older ones (Silent Hunter 4 , IL2 1946) , which have lower demands and run well on this system.

ArmA3 and X-Plane seem to run quit well on medium to high settings but a  problem seems to crop up when I ask for multi-tasking (ie TrackIR ) with ArmA3 or X-Plane. I get a significant FPS drop when looking around.

I'm wondering if the $350.00 or so investment in an A10-7850 quad core coupled with the R7-260X video card would give me the performance boost I'm looking for vs a new build (but more powerful CPU) that would cost about $1,000 or more (board , CPU , PS , memory etc. etc.).

Opinions appreciated.

If you're going to use a discrete video card then you don't need an APU setup. I would suggest the 760K for $90 and the Sapphire R9 280 for $199. Yes it is twice as expensive as the 260X but it has more than twice the power, which means you won't have to upgrade again in the near future. Assuming of course your power supply is up to the task, any reputable (SeaSonic or Enermax branded unit, or the brands they make such as Corsair) 550w unit or greater would be sufficient, 750-850w for optimal efficiency.

Txs for input. I was asking about the processor / card as I was wondering if it would be sufficient rather than a compete rebuild (board , CPU , memory PS etc. etc.) and then trying to dispose of this one. It's an FM2+ socket so CPU choices are limited .. unless there is another line that will fit this board.

The 760K is Socket FM2 and supported by your motherboard, so you're talking between $190-$290 to upgrade your system to more capable 760K and either R7 260 and R9 280.

Thans for the heads up on that chip. I looked at it and it has about the same performance and is somewhat better in some areas as my X4-965 which ran everything just fine. Ordered one today.

If you have some good aftermarket cooling, preferably liquid, it should have some OC headroom as well.
