Hi Guys I hope you can help me figure out what is going on. Lately I have been testing a few games with my MSI R9 290 Gaming 4Gig card. I have been testing because I had noticed substantial decrease in performance in games once I upgraded my graphics card. I upgraded from an AMD 7980 3 Gig ICE-Q graphics card.

Now, If I keep everything the same on my computer and simply pop out 1 graphics card and pop the other graphics card in This is what I see:

MWO:
R9 290 Min FPS: 15 Max FPS: 170 Average FPS: 40
7980 Min FPS: 50 Max FPS: 160 Average FPS: 100

TESO:
R9 290 Min FPS: 30 Max FPS: 175 Average FPS: 60
7980 Min FPS: 60 Max FPS 170 Average FPS: 80

I see the same thing across other games as well, the 290 is just not performing as well as the older card. I have the most recent drivers for all my system components, 32 Gig of ram and my CPU ( AMD FX-8350 4Ghz) isn't breaking a sweat on these games. My board, a GA-990FX-UD3 has the latest bios and should have no issue with bottle-necking. Any ideas?

Best guess I can offer with just that to go on is that the 290 is throttling due to too low a target temperature, too low a max fan speed, and/or too poor airflow in the case.

You need to look at clock speeds and GPU usage.

That would be my guess as well as you have higher maximum FPS figures. Use MSI Afterburner to log the GPU usage and clocks to check for throttling.
