Hi guy's

I've been working on my step daughter's PC she was complaining that it was really slow and blue screening on her wile playing the Sims.

I traced it back to a over heating 4870 video card so switched it with another 4870 I had kicking around then started to run every test i could think of with no problems showing up.

But wile running prime95 I noticed that the core temp wasn't going past 40c (with the stock heatsink) so I pulled up AOD and seen that the cpu was throttling down to 1.Hz when the core temp hit 40c. 

Is this normal for these (e) cpu's or could this be a symptom of a bigger problem?

 

system spec's

No OC'ing everything pretty much on auto.

Phenom X3 8450e 2.1Ghz rev.B3 65W

Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI  BIOS version 1302

4x 1Gb DDR2 800Mhz ram

Asus HD4870

550W psu (can't remember what make it is and since I painted it  (don't ask) it might be a little hard to find out.

Are you sure of it not being in its idle power state?

 

Do the first generation of Phenom C.P.U.s not have that known problem of Windows's thread management fixed, and, if so, is this the cause?

Can't see it being in idle power state wile running prime95.

Its just weird that this cpu has such a low thermal threshold of only 40c (50c cpu, 40c core)

I don't remember it doing this when I built this pc a couple years ago

 

EDIT

The max temp for this cpu is 71c so it should't be throttling down at 40c so I'm wonering if its mobo or psu related

Have you tried disabling Cool and Quiet?

It might be a motherboard throttling setting....either temp based or possibly voltage based....just a thought.

Canis-X; Her mobo really sucks and dose not have a lot options in the BIOS but I will try setting the clock speed and voltage manualy and see if that helps if not than its probaly time to upgrade her system.

 

I was thinking on moving her up to a APU system maybe one of these new F2 socket APU's . It should handle the sims3 with no problem right?

Hi Slayerx,

you can try IntelBurnTest, it works on AMD processors too and gives a bit better observations/faster results for troubleshooting potential throttling issues, e.g due to temperature issues.

Avoid leaving the test running without supervision as it pushes the processor hard.

Thanks go_for I'll try that next time I need to run a stress test

bur as for this 8450 throttling I beleave its mobo related but since its running really stable for a old rig I'm not going to worry about.
