I requested an RMA from AMD for my failed AMD CPU three months ago. I received an automated responsed that included:

"Thank you for contacting AMD Global Customer Care. We have created a Customer Care Support account based on the details you submitted with your service request. A separate email containing your service request reference number will follow."

I have received nothing since then. Is there a way to contact AMD to find out what happened to my RMA request? Thanks.

You'll have to start a new one as RMA's only last so long before they are canceled.

Make sure that you check your spam/junk mail folder for the other email.

Thanks. I hope they still honor the warranty. The 1st RMA request was within the three year time limit. The 2nd RMA request was past the three year limit. Note I ordered the retail CPU on August 5, 2009.

Unless it is a Phenom II then if they do decide to honor it you will most likely only get a check, or AMD gift card, for the current market value, which would be about $20

It is a Phenom II X4 955 BE.

It will not work without errors with DDR3 RAM. In another board it worked at full speed for a while with DDR2 RAM. Now it takes two boots to get it working. The 1st boot there is no video. After a forced shutdown and a 2nd boot it comes up and is forced to work at only 800MHz. Even manual setting of the muliplier does no good. It always reverts back to 4X.

Sure it's not the motherboard itself?

I don't think so but I might try an Athlon X2 3800+ in it to see if the system runs normally with it.

It the Piledriver looks OK in the coming weeks I plan to buy an AMD FX-8350 to put in my main system. I then can put the Phenom II X4 960T back in the other system to replace the faulty Phenom II X4 955.

Here are the specs for my two systems:

=====================================================
System 1:
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
Phenom II X4 955 @3.2GHz
Corsair H60 CPU cooler
GSkill TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 @1300
-----------------------------------------------------
System 2:
ASUS M4N82 Deluxe
Phenom II X4 960T @3.0GHz
Stock CPU cooler (from Phenom II X4 955)
Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 @1300
-----------------------------------------------------
Notes for System 1:
Running at stock speeds
CPU runs at 40-50C (hotter than expected with H20)
Started having numerous memory errors
-----------------------------------------------------
Notes for System 2:
Running at stock speeds
CPU runs at 40-50C
=====================================================

CPUs swapped between systems

=====================================================
System 1:
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
Phenom II X4 960T @3.2GHz (overclocked)
Corsair H60 CPU cooler
GSkill TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 @1600 (overclocked)
-----------------------------------------------------
System 2:
ASUS M4N82 Deluxe
Phenom II X4 955 @800MHz
Stock CPU cooler
Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 @1300
-----------------------------------------------------
Notes for System 1:
Running at overclocked speeds
CPU runs at 15-20C
No longer has memory errors
-----------------------------------------------------
Notes for System 2:
Ran OK although rather hot for about 2 weeks
Then it would only boot at vastly underclocked speeds
CPU runs at 40-50C
Does not have memory errors

If I recall correctly, there where a couple of changes in the SSE2 instruction set ( versions) of the 955 that later evolved into the 960.

You may need to dig into the archives (BIOS versions) that best match your perticular 955.

I don't understand what point you are trying to make.

The CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE, C2 stepping

The motherboard is an ASUS M4N82 Deluxe with BIOS 2101

There is a newer BIOS on the site, so get it, something may have become corrupted over time.

Well its been over 4 months now and two tries. There is still no response from AMD about my RMA. Do they even honor their CPU warranties? Should I just give up on AMD?

I did. The Phenom II 955 still did not work right. In fact it now will only boot at 800MHz instead of the expected 3.2GHz.

The original motherboard now has a Phenom II 960T in it that works great with no problems.

You probably should get a new FX CPU then, they are not too expensive and use that on your new system board and your other CPU that still works on the spare rig.
