Electricity wise, Piledriver is more efficient than Bulldozer, but still horribly worse than Intel. Power wise, Piledriver is more powerful than Bulldozer, but still suffers from single threaded task weakness, and falls well behind the top end Intel offerings. Price wise, Piledriver is $40 cheaper than Bulldozer (ish, depends on the eTailer) and beats the Intel offerings at that price (and slightly higher ones as well), but what you save in up front cost you pay back in a monthly electricity bill...

It's a good start, but AMD can't afford to stay with Piledriver more than a year, they need to quickly get Steamroller out (for all we know AMD may have top secret first or second test generation Steamroller chips in their labs already), keep up with the double digit gains, and get the dies shrunk quickly so they can compete in the power efficiency field...

Well I finally have made it around to this forum. I got my order in for the 8350 and should have it in a day or so. I also have finally done a partial upgrade on the rest of my system. I have a Asus Sabertooth R2 and 16gb of Corsair Vengeance 1866 and 2  240gb Corsair Force GT ssd's. Man those ssd's are awesome, more then twice as fast as my older Extreme series from Corsair.Still have my GTX 480's but I may make a change on them in the near future. I am upgrading a family member's pc so I decided to make the jump to Vishera. However I am keeping my 1090T, I won't part with that cpu.

I still don't think I'd actually buy one, but it got more of a bump than I was expecting.  Hopefully at the next die shrink they'll be able to do something about its power dissipation, and maybe get some more room to crank up clock speed a bit more.

If single-threaded performance is so important, why not remove one of the modules on a quad-core FX chip (leaving it with 6 cores) and replace it with a very fast processor core that only does single-threaded tasks very quickly?

So instead of 4 pairs of dual-core modules, you'd have 3 dual-core pairs + one very fast core. That way amd would win all the single-threaded benchmarks, and do reasonably well on the multi-threaded ones.

Is this possible?

So far I like this 8350 FX chip. Easily overclocks to 5ghz with 1.404 voltage. I am not going to be doing any benchmarking yet. Don't really have the time now, maybe later on. I just like that it runs stable so easy on air, temps are no issue.

I am not going to keep it at 5ghz at this time, I did start to run into some stability problems stress testing, I had to add some more voltage. I am going to keep it at 4.5ghz for everyday use though. I simply don't have the time to try and totally fine tune the bios. This Sabertooth mb has quite a few things on it I have to learn about compared, to my old MSI mb I was running my 1090T.

I am suprised there are not more people in here at least talking about these cpu's. In the old AMD Processor forumn we used to have a group that all used to have fun when the new cpu's came out.

It would probably have to be some kind of separate co-processor... I doubt trying to integrate that into the CPU its self would work... and then we'd end up in the same situation we're in now with the OS not knowing how to properly schedule threads.

Aye, much better to actually work on the IPC capabilities that way you get improvement in both single and multiple thread workloads. The only modern co-processor application I've seen is when VIA put a cryptography co-processor on their chips

I have just installed Win8, I am dual booting it with Win7. One thing I noticed interesting under Win8 task manager that it lists 4 cores then 8 logical processors. I know a little about the 4 module thing, but I find it strange that on the box it is shown as a 8 core processor. Just kind of throws me off how 8 shows it.

Win7 will do the same thing if you install the MS scheduler patch.  This is how MS "fixes" how it utilizes AMD's processors more efficiently.  Looks as though it is built into Win8 from the start.

I have had  this 8350FX a week or so now. Tell you what I really like this 8350FX. It may not be acceptable to some people due to benchmarks. As long as my games play fine and I can do tons of other things on it all at the same time without even the slightest hiccup, I am happy. I have done some benchmarking to make sure all my stuff is running up to par. I never really needed to upgrade from my 1090T, it was good enough for my needs, however I do pass on some of my parts to other family members, so I upgraded, except for passing on the 1090T. I just like having a computer that simply runs and does not even come near anywhere slowing down no matter how much I do. I have it running at 4.5ghz for daily use with no turbo. So far I love this 8350FX!

Here are some core utilizations when I was running the cpu benchmark with Crysis. Interesting how it spreads it out. 3 cpus used at 90%+ then kinda spread out. Cpu at 4.5ghz

One thing I have found interesting in another forum, a lot of people are saying it is better now to up the HT higher then the NB this time around from Denab and previous cpus. I myself have not run any tests to confirm it, but I am running my NB at 2400 and my HT at 2600. I have not had any issue with it running like that, I will research it myself more later on.
