A while ago I bought a new graphics card

AMD Radeon HD 7800

My CPU now needs an upgrade (so I can game on the highest specs)

my motherbord is

AMD Phenom(tm) 9650 Quad-Core Processor

How do I work out which motherbord works best with my graphics card?

Should I just buy the best motherbord I can afford?

or do I just need to upgrade the Cpu?

Well that's a gen 1.5 Phenom, so you most likely have a Socket AM2 or AM2+ motherboard, which have varied support for new processors. Your best bet would be to do an update to a modern Piledriver system.
