Never done this before. I have an HP with an AMD Athlon II X4 630 quad core processor.   I am wanting to change to an AMD Phenom II X6.  Both are Socket AM3.  What problems can I anticipate.? What will I lose or gain? Is this pretty much a plug and play operation?  Any great advice regarding this move appreciated.

Before you start swapping out cpus theres a few thing you must know so you don't run into any problems.1. find out what make and model of motherboard you using2. dose your motherboard support phenomII x6 cpu's if so which ones and do you have to update the BIOS?

Manufacturer, Model, Bios Revision. those are all helpful things.

The motherboard is an N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX(Alvorix)

form factor: uATX form factor: 24.4cm (9.6 inches) x 24.4cm (9.6 inches)

supports the following processor upgrades:  AMD Phenom ll X6 10xx six-core (Thuben core)  This is the one I'm wanting to install.  AMD Phenom ll X6 1045T x6

As far as having to update the BIOS, I haven't a clue.  I've read through the installation instructions thoroughly and this is not mentioned.

Stick to those, and you should be fine, be warry of the CPU TDP, even though the CPU might fall into the right series, make sure the TDP is under 95W.
