How do these processors differ from each other when compared for performence..

FX 8150 / FX 8350 compared to Opteron 6212 (Both BULLDOZER and 8 core 8 thread processors)

what makes 6212 a server class and other a desktop ?

Note:  i wish to run my system 24x7 with 3dsmax animation rendering

Get an 8350. Its cheaper and will do the same thing. (its based on piledriver not bulldozer) If your just doing 3dsmax. (not to mention you could spend the extra money on a 7970 if you doing SP/ DP style work and those excell at it)

Vishara claims up to 25% better IPC then bulldozer counterparts, although with AMD's own testing the average is a paltry 5. (it depends on what you are doing)

Other differences is vishara CPU's use less power are more efficient at multithreaded apps and a few tweaks here and there.

i was rendering some images(frames)in 3dsmax using backburner network rendering setup.
my 2 pcs in network are intel Xeon 5607 (2.6 GHz Quadcore x2) and i added 1 pc with FX 8150 (3.6GHz 8 Core) (with all other hardware identical ).
The xeon pcs rendered the frames in 7/8 mins (each) per frame while FX 8150 took 20-21mins for the same frame...

so i was thinking if i replaced the 8 core FX-8150 (Desktop processor) with 8 core server processor Opteron 6212, will it matchup with xeons ? or get very near..

Hi are the xeon overclocked as that chip lists 2.27 ghz the chip that runs at 2.6 is a Intel Xeon E5-2670 @ 2.60GHz. The 5607 as you can see at this site does not have a chance against a amd 8 core but if it is a 2670 it would blow away any amd cpu. But of course the 2670 is listed at $1600 http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Doesn't 3dsmax support Cuda or open CL for final frame rendering? If it does... I would be useing that seeing as how GPU's rendering in professional studio style programs really punish's the CPU's as far as rendering time goes. 

That being said if it does and you know how get it working. You could get an 8350/20 and use cuda or Open CL. (using an Nvidia Titan GPU if you want to do it cheaply or quadro for cuda, or Radeon 7970 for open CL) 

If it doesn't and you value your time... You are going to want either A. Intel systems or B. duel opteron CPU motherboards.

But I mean thats a question for the 3dsmax boards :-).

Rather than use 1 hot box for 3DS you can use a rack based setup and a blade box with 11 servers which will make mincemeat of a desktop.

Depending on the amount of rendering needed a bunch of compute GPUs may also be needed, then you are better off using Cray.

@ Vantharas... CUDA rendering is possible in 3dsMax and we use it some time, but it is not the best option for every type of work.. most times we need to use CPU cores for rendering (sad but true)

I am definitely planning a server CPU but not sure which to select (6272 or 6234 or 6212 ) with SUpermicro MOBO or ASUS KGPE-D16

so can i say that server grade cpu (opteron) will matchup with the xeons . If not 8 core 6212 but 12 core 6234 or 16 core 6272...

if needed will add 2 cpus..as these MOBOs allow dual cpu mounting.

now what will work better ? 2x 6212 (8 core) or 1x 6272 (16 core)..

do xeon processors with same core count and same clock speed that of opteron will always perform better..? why ? ( not in relation to money spent but in relation to work done quickly)

Yes because intel CPU's do far more work in the given amount of time. Instructions per clock as its called. Intels do more, in less time. Without getting into technical engineering stuff that I don't fully understand myself. 

Intel CPU's enjoy a hefty 15 to 30% higher IPC then there amd counterparts.
