Before you guys fuss at me for being not very smart - I'm 70 yrs old and I am not (smart), so here goes.  My aforementioned new cpu has a very small heat sink/fan provided with it.  I have an unused one that came with a Phenom II 965BE which looks to be "better" (bigger).  Can I/should I use it?  Are they pretty much interchangeable?  My second question, and I am hoping I am asking in the right place.  I bought a ASUS M5A97 Rev 2.0 motherboard also.  I checked on compatibility (cpu/mb) before I bought it, but I didn't realize that it said it was compatible only after some bios revision.  Well, I guess I won't know what bios version I have until I get my PC built.  Will my rebuild even post allowing me to get the revision if it is one bios revision behind?  I read in my book that came with the mb that there is a thing called "USB Bios Flashback" that sounds like it may apply, but dang I hate the chance screwing up all my stuff.  Any advice and help you might share is really appreciated.  Thank you.

Running the FX-6300 at stock settings and normal ambient temperature with a well ventilated case, the original fan should work just fine.
The other one from the Phenom II will work as well.

Re the motherboard and its processor support/BIOS, the board might POST or not.
Mostly it should POST, but you will need to update BIOS to make it identify the processor
correctly.

Hi, I used a larger AMD Heatpipe Heatsink with my FX-6300. It's the same cooler that comes with a Phenom II X6 1100T. So, yes they are interchangeable. I thought the stock HSF was a little small myself. And, I already had the other cooler, so...

Good luck. hope this helps!

Like go_for said, it could/should/might Post On with your CPU+mobo combo. But, if you happen to have any AM3 CPU, like that 965 you mentioned (or any other), you could install it, update your Bios, then install your new CPU. One thing: don't update a Bios under Windows. Do it through an USB flashdrive/CD/DVD during post. Your motherboard manual/website should bring you some lights about it...

Best regards...

What I would do is put the 965 in first then update the BIOS, then your not putting the new one in then taking it out and putting it back in. because every time you do that your going to have to clean both heatsink and cpu and re-apply thermol paste. And that's a real pain in the butt.
