Is this doable ? Sorry WMudrockJr  I meant to put some more info in here but was pulled away so here we go, I was hoping there would be a way to make this work for my processor old school cpu but runs windows 8 64bit just fine . I've been told this is why my system will not run 8.1 which I was hoping I could find a decent answer here.  Why Microsoft would make it availiable for 32bit cpu's and not 64bit cpu's is not good for some or even alot of us . Any way am I just out in the cold and waited to long to update my system, because I do not want to drop down to a 32bit version just to run Windows 8.1.

Well there is a hardware and a compatability scan done during the install for Windows 8.1, but it all depends on your CPU type.

If the machine is new it will probally support Windows 8.1, but just download AIDA64 trial if you are not sure.

Knowing a little more about your system would help. For future reference there is a Sticky Read Before Posting does detail the information that helps the other user when other users have issues or questions.

Hi

New to this board.

I have the same problem. Windows 8.1 X64 requires "CMPXCHG16B". We are currently running Windows 8.0 X64 Pro.

Windows 8 and 8.1 appear to have the same Requirements "CMPXCHG16B" support.

Can anyone offer any advice.

You can't introduce a feature, in this case CMPXCHG16B, onto a processor which lacks said feature, upgrade your old hardware if you want to use the newest software.

Microsoft only lists Windows 8.1 as requiring CMPXCHG16b.

I understand that MisterEd , and they need to remove this requirement too ! Lots of people will be shut out just because if this .

Um, no, "lots of people" will not be shut out because very few people use hardware that old on software that new. So either stick with Windows 8 or upgrade your hardware, those are the only two solutions.

I think you should contact AMD technical support with this issue..maybe get a answer and/or possible fix. In any event it will make them aware of the problem.

Ninja Zombie Killer , I may do that I just came here for some advise nothing or anything else . If I annoyed anyone please accept my aplogizes . Some day maybe soon I will upgrade my system with some newer "guts", for now runs what I want just fine . You and everyone else take care and hopefully I may just stick with an AMD CPU !

Well this problem might be to help push PC sales. I have to old P4 boxes that my grand kids use to play Halo and old NFS games. Of course the O/S is dying off this spring. Technology does have a shelf life and it seems to get shorter which each leap.
