Hi, I would like some advice on upgrading my PC's operating system from Windows XP to Windows 7, or possibly Windows 8/8.1.

Looks like drivers might not be available for the board unless I take a chance on Vista drivers working with Windows 7.

Here's my PC's current specs: 1.)CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.41 GHz 2.)MB: Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe 3.) Memory: DDR 2GB 4.) Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT 5.)HD: 80GB 6.) OP: Windows XP.

I would suggest a complete system update given the age of the components.

you can update your OS to windows 7 but 8/8.1 might be too much for your system.

All you have to worry about is the audio and LAN drivers but theres way of getting around that.

What's the reason for the update?  I'd probably stay with XP if I could. Given the hardware specs, you won't see much performance improvement. XP is actually somewhat faster in some areas. As black zion was saying, it’s probably more cost effective to purchase a new comp, especially if you purchasing a Windows 7 licence. I personally wouldn’t upgrade, especially since they’re no official drivers for win 7 or 8.1 for your motherboard. It’ll probably give you more trouble than it’s worth.

Hi one of my systems is a AMD Athlon 64 3400 + socket 754  on a kv8-max3 board I use windows 7 64 bit and it runs great. Nvidia has the nforce drivers for windows 7 any other drivers you can find. The worst that could happen if it has a older 3com eithernet you may need to buy a eithernet card. Also that 7800gt will run windows 7 great. So you have no chance with windows 8 but windows 7 should work fine.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on an even older system:

1. CPU: AMD Athlon XP2800+ 2.2 GHz (Socket A)
2. MBD: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
3. RAM: DDR 2x1GB
4. GPU: Nvidia GeForce FX5900

I would not have gone out and bought a copy of Windows 7 just for this computer but I already had a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack. I had only used 2 of the 3 allowed installations so I had one available to use.

Back in 2006 I had tried Windows Vista RC2 on it but it I was dissapointed with it. Not only was it slow but driver support was rather lacking. Windows 7 works better than Vista ever had. My only problem was with the wireless network adapter. The Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter Windows XP driver does not work with Windows 7. I did manage to find a driver from the manufacturer of the chip on the card that works with Windows 7.
