Hey there guys,

     Was recently told it might be possible to upgrade one's motherboard BIOS on an older board (2 years) to obtain sata3 capabilities from sata2.  I would like to upgrade to a better and larger SSD but my current is sata2 into a sata2 port.  I would enjoy the advantages of the faster speeds in the sata3.  Refraining from a board upgrade would be financially beneficial.  

Is this information correct or was he jerking my proverbial chain?  The information was derived from a computer shop owner, a reputable one.

Any help is appreciated.

The controller itself must be SATA III capable, never heard of a BIOS update being able to turn SATA II ports into SATA III. But even at SATA II 300MB/s speeds, a single drive won't exceed that. My Vertex 4, which is SATA III and has a rated speed of 560MB/s read and 510MB/s write doesn't even come close to that outside of benchmarks (and we all know how much ATTO means to real life performance). So go ahead and get you a SSD and don't worry, it makes a world of difference over a 7200RPM HDD.
