No socket AM3+ mainboard on the market supports PCI Express 3.0 x16. The lates AMD videocards however support the PCI Express 3.0 x16. If you plug one into an AM3+ mainboard it swithces atomatically to the PCI Express 2.0 x16 setting because that's the max the board can offer. Question: For really powerful videocards like R9 290x/290, can it be that the PCI Express 2.0 x16 is funtioning as a bottleneck between the mainboard and the videocard?

The ASUS Sabertooth Gen3/R2 supports PCIe 3.0, but they no longer make it. PCIe 2.0 x16 has sufficient bandwidth so the 290X is not bottlenecked.

Checked Sabertooth Gen3/R2. Couldn't beleive my eyes but it indeed supports PCI Express 3.0. They must have used an external PCI controller for it because AMD 990FX/SB950 chipset, which is the most powerful from AMD, does not support it.

Black_Zion do you know of any other AM3+ M.B. in production that has this feature?

None do, but AMD is set to finally do a much needed chipset and socket refresh soon which will bring native PCIe 3.0 support, as well as other modern standards.

I was looking at a chassis for a new build, the old box is already rotting fast

the monster 760D seems to have room for a ton of hardware
