I bought a used HP dv7-1451nr with native Vista Home Premium 64, AMD Turion X2 Ultra processor, 4GB RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 3200 gpu.

Hard drive broke almost immediately, so I replaced it.  No OS.

Guy who sold me the hard drive had a copy of Windows 8 Release Preview; I figured, what the hell.  Loaded it.

Works surprisingly well, was on the internet right out of the gate.

Windows 8 loaded old "AMD Driver 8.97.10.0" for the Display Adapter, so I wanted to upgrade.  Downloaded the 12-6-legacy_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql driver and installed it.

All green checkmarks and smiley faces, log even said it succeeded.

PROBLEM: System ignores the new driver completely, like it never happened.  No showing the updated driver in Device Manager, no 3D options in CCC (barely any options at all), nada.

Halp plase.

You need to go to HP support, find your laptop model and download the drivers for Win8. No matter what version you get, stay with them. That is a very, very weak graphics chip and you will see no benefit from trying to update it.

edit: after further checking, you may need to contact HP support.
