We recently ordered two 5870's in order to upgrade our alienware m17x R2 laptop from 4870's. The cards we received do not seem to be crossfire capable...

1. Do 5870's come non-crossfire?

2. Do we have to crossfire them in order for them to work properly?

3. Is is possible to MAKE them crossfire capable?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know if it changed in the 5800-series cards, but the 3800 and 4800 MXM cards came in two flavors - master and slave.  That's how you got Crossfire.  If it's the same with the 5800 cards, you apparently bought two masters, and need to exchange one for a slave.

That makes sense, except that neither card seems to have a connector port for a crossfire cable. Even if both were masters, shouldn't there be a place to plug in one end of a connector cable?

There's no direct connection between the two cards in my laptop's 3870x2 setup.

So, conceivably, we could install the two 5870's and they would work in tandem, without a crossfire cable? Or is there something we have to do on the software side to make them work together?

No 5870M's have a crossfire connector most definetly. Check notebookcheck.net forums. They have in depth coverage of the laptop you currently have. from what cards to order to how to hook them up to what works / what doesn't ect..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGX7kMa70tw Scroll to 5min to see the crossfire cable ect..

Yeah. we watched that video last week....the cards he is showing are actually 4870's....they're identical to the ones that came out of the Alienware to begin with.

I will check out that other website you mentioned.....thanks

PS, are you saying that ALL 5870's crossfire? Because the two cards we have are definitely 5870's, but no place to connect a cable to.

No , I am not saying all 5870M's crossfire. If I were you, I would send that back and get a single 7970M. (it would be faster)

The dell specific MXM 3.0B cards for the alienware's though have crossfire connectors. So do some Sager / Clevo ones. It depends on the s/n of the actual card.

And second, that video I post, those cards are 5870's. You can look at the end of the video where he has GPU-Z up and those cards are showing up as 5870Ms.... So I'm not sure what video you watched but its not the one I posted. (5min for the crossfire connectors and 8:50 for the GPU screen shot with the 5870M crossfire . That same guy also put a 580M in his laptop as well. And he shows how to upgrade the same laptop with an I7 engineering sample. He's a pretty good resource as far as what will work with your laptop.).
