Hello !

I have tried to fix the following problem but I seem to be running out of things to try.
The notebook I have been using for years recently crashed all of a sudden. Ever since, the screen stays blank upon Windows startup, except if Linux was started directly before. I.e. restarting the computer after a Windows session will result in a blank screen, restarting after a Linux session will work normally.
Even then, Windows still has some trouble - setting my desktop to the highest resolution (1440x900) will not work; instead, the resolution will be set to the lowest one available.
When checking the grahpics card, Windows Device Manager states that 'This device cannot start (Code 10)'.
Automatically upating drivers doesn't work. Neither does manual installation via Catalyst Control Center (tried multiple times with downloads of different versions and from different sites). Error messages will either state that no better driver can be found, or that a - unspecified - file cannot be found.
My guess is that all I'd need is to repair/update the Windows drivers for the graphics card, but as stated above, I don't seem to be able to. Does anybody know where I could get the raw files, without that stupid Catalyst Control Center ?
AMD Driver Downloader returns the error message 'Could not find product or OS'.
Any other guesses as to what the problem is will be welcome, too.
Thanks !

Here are the specs:

Lenovo Thinkpad R400 (2786W3C)
Dual boot: Ubuntu (no issues there)
Windows XP 32bit SP3, DirectX 9.0c and Windows .NET Framework 3.5 installed
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470, 256mb
