I have a similar issue with an ASUS N61JQ, ATI HD 5730 1GB, Windows 7 64 bit.

My driver just would not install and It gave me no backlight after startup. I had to use a restore point.

What kind of message is it giving you? And did you get a black screen after you installed your driver?

Did it give you the orange message (driver updated but with problems) or the red message (driver installation failed)

You said your driver is 2 years old, so I would update your other software first like Microsoft.Net (2.0, 4.5, etc.). I tried this, it didn't work, but it might work for you. it has worked in the past for me.

Please let me know what happens, OP. This could just be an issue with the ATI drivers.

You need to get customized drivers from Acer. Laptops are supposed to run on OEM drivers.

First you should read the sticky "Installing Mobility Drivers" in the LAPTOP forum. Then there is a sticky "Uninstall and Installing new drivers" in the FAQ section ....pay special attention to the netframework version requirement. If you have not done so lately, go to Windows Update and manually install any 'optional' downloads (except any graphics drivers).

I have a similar laptop...never had any issues updating drivers. Make sure you have the latest bios from Asus. Go to Windows Update and manually install "optional updates" (except any graphics drivers)...this is a important step. Download the drivers from here, don't use the 'auto install thing. Follow the steps outlined here for "Uninstalling and Installing AMD drivers" in the FAQ section.

I did some research, and it looks like I am not the only one with this issue. It looks like it is an issue with the ATI Driver with the laptop 5xxx HD series.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?p=4660183

I have the latest BIOS update for my laptop.

EDIT: Can I ask when was the last time you updated your similar laptop's GPU? Was it 13.9?

Also, what are the specs and brand of that laptop?

If you look at my posts, the Asus laptop is listed. There is nothing wrong with the drivers...I am using the latest beta.

Yea, yours is almost the same as mine. So mine should work...

So can you confirm that you got 13.9 to work on yours?

I haven't tried any of the betas.

Confirmed...13.9 works. I hope you tried the suggestions I posted. Windows Update, download drivers from the site I gave you, follow the steps to uninstall, install the new driver suite.

Edit: Try one of the beta drivers

Thanks.

I will do that later today.

Just a few more questions if you have time.

1) is it ok to download those drivers even though it doesn't say "laptop or mobility" drivers?

2) can you send me a link to the drivers for my graphics card from last May? I don't know how to. I would like to have that driver backed up just in case this new one fails again and a restore point doesn't bring back the driver I uninstalled.

3) I got my laptop from warranty a couple of weeks ago and I believe they repaired or replaced the logical board. I noticed some different numbers on some of the small chips and capacitors on the logical board. CPU Z still recognizes it as an Asus n61jq mainboard.

I used to have the most up to date bios (212), now I have 210. im guessing they used parts or an entire board replacement from another asus n61jq

Is that a problem? Do I have to have 212?

I'd rather not update to 212 unless necessary b/c I can risk bricking the system.

EDIT:

It says my CCC version is 13.4. Any clue how I can redownload that complete package so I can back that up to a CD R or something?

The link has Mobility or desktop drivers....click on the link....and I suggest you try the new beta drivers. The Asus drivers/ support should tell you what the bios corrects....if applicable, then you should install it.

I honestly do not see any mobility/laptop drivers on this page:

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/downloads.aspx

When I click on the HD 5xxx series, I get "Desktop Driver". I see no laptop specfic things. :/

I still have the same issue.

I think is because of the .net frame work. It says it is installing it, even though I already have it installed and fully updated. It hangs on the framework part for a long time.

Is there a certain net framework 4.5 we should download? I noticed there are 3 of them available.

Edit;

Here is an update on the issue.

I reinstalled 13.4 just to make sure that worked. It gave me no backlight after the installation.  But after a restart it worked fine.

13.10, gave me a successful installation, but no backlight at all...

I checked the log, all success.
