I have recently been getting thermal shutdowns on my laptop whenever running steam and playing games. This has only started in the past couple of months when playing either Civilization V or Borderlands 2. When I first purchased these games (mid December) they played fine without any issues, but since January whenever I go to play either of these games after loading up and getting into actual gameplay my screen goes black after about 5 minutes of playing but I'm still able to hear sounds, then my computer shuts down with a thermal shutdown. Could this issue be from a recent driver update that's causing the graphics card to overclock itself for some reason? I'm not the most tech-smart person around, so any help is appreciated!

The first thing to try is cleaning the air vents and any internal parts that you can get to with compressed air.

It's only whenever I attempt to play a steam game that it shuts down. Everything is chean and clear. My computer can stay on for a week straight with not a single issue, but whenever I load a steam game, after 5-10 minutes of gameplay I get a thermal shutdown.

Well if this just started happening, and it is a thermal shutdown...and you have made no other changes (did you change any game settings or CCC settings) and the laptop is clean of dust bunnies...then have you updated your graphics with a new driver set?

It's been happening since sometime last month. I bought the games around the middle of December and they played fine all through Dec, and the issues began around the middle of January. My laptop is almost 4 years old, so could this happening be related in any way to my graphics card possibly going out or about to completely die?

Also, I've read that since my computer has dual graphics cards (performance and one for power saving) that I should only download gpu driver updates through HP and not from AMD because it could cause them to clash or something instead of working in sync. Is this true, or just talk?

It depends....'dual graphics' is too general

Read thru this and most of your questions will be answered...it's from HP, but all laptops have similar functions. The terms are similar as well.
