So I updated from 10.5 or so to the 12.6... and while it has all the familiar trappings that I enjoy so much.. my card (4870 HD x2) now slowly builds up heat even at rest!

normally with the fans speed at 47% or so it would keep a very stable temp, for low end games that started to tax the card I might have to bump the speed up to 60% or so.

Now I have to run the fans at +90% so get it to cool down a little. otherwise at rest it starts to crawl up into the 90's. I'm afraid to try to even run anything lest it damage the card.  

is this ati's way of making sure I need to buy a new card? I'd rather it not detonate, otherwise I might have to go back to Nvidia

lets see,your running a 5 year old card,and why exactly did you you upgrade your drivers?If everythings working,there is no need to update them.Just use what works,
