I decided to open this topic because I and lot of my friends have one of these "legacy" cards and all of us expecting a lots of issues with the latest 12.6 driver.

So everyone who have a legacy card please post your problem here, lets hope AMD will release a driver update for these products.

We don't expect new features, but we expect a proper working driver!

Windows 8 Issues:

Camera  doesn't work in Modern UI, we have to roll back to default inbuilt driver if we want to use it.

However this inbuilt driver is even older than 12.6, also it's without CCC and proper OpenGL support - so useless...

Probably more...

Common issues:

4870x2 "clock bug"on second GPU which already present in earlier drivers.

WebGL ,Direct2D, Hardware accelaration in Firefox - we simply can't use it, because it requires Catalyst 12.8 or newer.

Yes we can enable it with "force.enable" options, but it's buggy, text and images are blurry.

Probably more...

Tested cards: HD2600XT, HD3850, HD4600 series (4650, 4670 - incl. mobility and desktop products), HD4850, HD4870X2

Unfortunately it's not about expecting better drivers or waiting for them. AMD decided that these cards are not supported under Windows 8 at all. I don't think they'll take it back.

Your options are:

1. Waiting for the miracle to happen. They might release something eventually. It may happen because of so many angry and unsatified users.

2. Revert to Windows 7, Vista or XP. (Best option I think.)

3. Next time you buy a graphics card, remember this and vote with your wallet.

Well, that "solves" only the Windows 8 metro ui issue.

But Firefox accelaration doesn't work at all if you have older than catalyst 12.8.

I don't want them to release a WDDM 1.2 driver for W8 they should but they won't... A proper WDDM 1.1 driver will be enough.

And reading serveral forums lot of people have trouble with this driver.

Also cards like 4850, 4870(x2), and 4890 are powerful enough to handle "modern" games and I doub't there won't be any issue with amd cards in the future, so I accept they don't want to release drivers monthly, but a 3-4/year would be acceptable.

You must be new to AMD cards if you don't know how this works. Back when cards prior to HD series were moved to legacy status, they also promised 3-4 drivers per year. Then they released 1 and no more. Then they released the same thing twice again (with newer but unchanged CCC and the same driver) just to make it look like they're releasing something. Also note that those cards never got proper Windows 7 support despite people wanting it badly.

Wrong as per usual there were 4 legacy drivers released for x19xx and earlier cards. 9.3, 9.6 (which came out a few months after the normal 9.6), 9.11 and 10.2.  The file version numbers were not changed since they can't easily be changed due to the way the build process works and it wasn't worth the effort.

The drivers are different as they have different file sizes and different issues with them.

You also can't magic WDDM 1.2 support into hardware that only supports WDDM1.1.  Same goes for WDDM1.0 & WDDM1.1.

Basic stuff like display management in CCC does not require WDDM features at all. You can copy-paste the ancient template response, still it won't change anything. The cards were abandoned very quickly and we'll probably see the same thing again.

If you wanted to "open this topic" your a little late...There is already a forum just for your cards...."extended support" where I hope a mod moves this post. the subject has been answered several times.

There is one solution for desktop cards. Sell this cards and buy another from nvidia where support for older cards is much better.

Same level as hd4890 example 260gtx 216core, gtx280. This cards still have better support. Ups sorry every little support is much better than support from amd.

Please don't protect AMD. There are people who don't need to change PC components every year or two. But they must change software because of their job.

Use Catalyst 12.2 if you want the Camera app to work along with all the other Windows 8 apps.

I would be satisfied if AMD would simply post a viable 12.6 AGP package for downloading, because the one that's been there since 7/24/12 will not install Catalyst Control Center or a valid driver for my HD4650 so I've been stuck with 12.4 -- works okay most of the time, but still...if they're going to put something up for users to download at least make it function properly.
