I have following configuration:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3200+
Mother board: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Graphic card: Sapphire HD 3850 AGP 512 MB
Disk: 500GB WD VelociRaptor (WD5000HHTZ)
RAM: 3GB - composed of three 1GB modules (Kingston KHX3200AK2/2G)
Legal version of Win XP 32bit SP3 + including all updates
I have bought a new hard drive and did a clean system install. I did all updates via Windows Update and then tried to install latest hotfix drivers (12.6). After running the installation I was only able to install the Catalyst Install Manager. Nothing else was listed in the component list. See screenshot below.
When I go to Device Manager and look for graphic card hardware ID, I see:
PCI\VEN = 1002 and DEV = 9515
Looking into the vendor / device database here:
I can find that Vendor = 1002 stands for AMD and Device 9515 is 3850 AGP graphic card.
Now if I look for the .inf file which is by default present here:
I can see that there is no such Vendor / Device combination !!!
Now if I look into the 12.4 version, I can find this Vendor / Device combination:
"%AMD9515.1%" = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9515
AMD9515.1 = "ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP"
I can find the same e.g. in 12.1 drivers.
What I don't understand is why AMD states that this driver is aplicable for 3xxx graphic cards when the support at least for 3850 AGP card was removed???
The 12.6 driver was released about half year ago, when AMD plans to fix this???
However this all is just a detail...
I installed the 12.4 driver. I opened Firefox and experienced terrible problems. Opening a menu took several seconds with CPU usage of 100% The same with displaying a tooltip. Sometimes the pages were redrawn from top to bottom for several seconds. FF was crashing very often. I believe this is because FF has some hardware acceleration. When trying browsing via IE, I only experienced crashes. I also had problems with movie playing. So I tried lower versions 12.3, 12.1, 11.12 and so on... (of course I removed the driver via Catalyst Intall Manager before installing a new one). All of them had the same issue. Being desperate I started to look over the internet and found e.g. this:
I am experiencing exactly what ZebC mentioned.
"Problem is, cat 12.8 AGP version, doesn't contains correct info. In fact, so called "agp hotfix" is just ordinary "non-agp" version. Last proper "agp version" was CAT 12.4. So, those "strange" users who are still using an APG graphics card are advised to search and install an older version of catalyst suite. Probably something from 11.x line is the best option, because 12.x has some strange problem with 2d layer acceleration (e.g in the firefox)."
After many and many trials I ended with 10.12 drivers. Now I am not experiencing issues in FF as described above, but have different issues in FF on pages with Flash. Even when such page is not displayed, but is behind another window, FF is taking 100% of CPU power in regular intervals (for 3-5s every 10s) and after some time FF crashes or whole system crashes.
Is here anybody who has Win XP 32bit and 3580 AGP card? If so which drivers are working without any issues?
I don't understand how AMD can even release such drivers, when they are obviously unusable...
