I have inheritted an XFX Radeon 4870HD from my Dad as he upgraded, however the fan on it runs permanently, i've updated to the latest drivers and tried all I can think of (other than removing the casing on the card and re-seating the fan / heatsink).

The card itself stays seriously hot (far too hot to touch for more than a second), and the fan runs at 100% constantly and is quite noisy. The card itself performs fine, however the slightly odd thing is that the fan is pushing out barely warm air.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to stop the fan running constantly or to make it more effective at actually cooling the card ?

Thanks in advance.

What was your previous card? Did it require LESS power to operate than the 4870?What psu do you have?
