I just connected my Gainward HD4850 GS via hdmi to my plasma screen, but there's no sound.

I uninstalled the catalyst drivers and installed them again and when I entered the sound settings and tested the AMD HDMI Output, I heard a "bip" sound from the tv and a second later I got a massage the device is being used by another program.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Control Panel / Sound / Playback tab

On the list should be "Digital Display Audio" if your drivers are in proper and your CARD and CABLE support audio over the HDMI.

Select that device, near the bottom; Set as default.

Done. I don't know if your 48oo series card suports this, perhaps some who knows for sure will chime in..

If there's no sound through your monitor and there's also no High definition Audio in the "playback" tab  in sound control panel, try this:

1. start>right click on "computer" click "properties">Device Manager

2 Go to sound, there should be one called AMD High definition audio or something i forgot the name>right click Uninstall>when a confirmation window appear tick the "Delete driver software for this device".

3 after it finish uninstall, click the scan for hardware changes at the top of the device manager.>the name should be change from Amd High definition audio to High definition audio.

After this procedure, the high definition audio should appear on the sound control panel, set it as default this sould fix your problem.
