Is it safe going to 3rd party websites to download crucial hardware drivers?

Shouldn't I keep the binary source secure and free from malware and trojans by going to AMD/ATI download archives?

I mean first time I installed Windows 7 the year it was released, Windows update automatically downloaded binary drivers from Microsoft for my graphic card.  After that the antivirus warned about a trojan after the graphic's driver update.
