I am preparing my Dell Dimension 9100 Pentium 4  Win XP sp3 pc  for Windows 7. The Microsoft Windows Upgrade Advisor  reported that my Radeon X300 Series and Radeon X300 Series secondary have available updates on  the AMD website.  First I took the recommendation from the Dell websiteisgust; which recommended the ATI 128MB  PCI-Express x16 Radeon X300 SE, v.8.23-060209a1-030546C, A05 which I downloaded and installed. When I ran the upgrade advisor again it flagged this upgraded driver as ‘incompatible’ and I cannot roll back to the original Radeon X300 and X300 secondary (although my display seems fine). When I went to the AMD website  and specified the options (Radeon x3xx) the site brought up the Catalyst Software Suite (includes the display driver, catalyst control center  WDM drivers)  AND  the WDM integrated driver. Could someone be kind enough to let me know if this sounds correct ?  Do I need both?

Thank you very much in advance.

HBT

You need to upgrade your video card, the $20 HD 5450 is the cheapest route.

Thanks Black_Zion. I'm all thumbs when it comes to installing cards.  Does it come with instructions on how to install?

I really appreciate your advice.

Open case, unscrew the existing card, remove card, insert new card, apply screw, close case. But yes, it does come with instructions.

The new card resolved the problem of the old Radeon card but the Windows upgrade advisor is still flagging ATI Desktop Component version 6.14.10.5120 with a yellow warning icon ('known issues - may experience issues with Win 7). Do I need to be concerned about this for my Win 7 install?

Thanks again,

HBT

Is this the correct choice? Catalyst Software Suite 1-14-2014 Description:

Package contains the following graphics drivers and dependent/required software for the products specified in the current version's official release notes:
                          Display Driver ver. 9.00.300.1.1
                          Catalyst Control Center ver. 2013.1220.0657.12383

Thanks,

It is still flagging ATI Desktop Component version 6.14.10.5120 as a problem. Did I install the correct item?  The revision number which I installed from your url was 13.12 with a release date of 1-14-2014.

correction: It is now flagging ATI Desktop Component 6.14.10.5183. I have an item in add/remove programs called ATI Control Panel which is this version.  Sorry for the error.

I figured you went ahead and upgraded like you were supposed to when you put in the 5450.

I was in the process of clearing all warnings from the Win 7 upgrade advisor report. Thus I had not yet installed Win 7. So Catalyst Software Suite  is not compatible with xp? I guess it's ok as long as it will work with Win 7 but in the meantime do  you have any suggestions? It may be several more days at least until I can install Win 7.

Thanks,

HBT

Put the old card back in until right before you install Windows 7, there is no point in troubleshooting problems which will not exist in a few days.
