I have a new machine which I started from scratch:

Asus P7H55M-usb3, BIOS 0901 10/29/2010

Intel iCore 3 530 2,93Ghz

Crucial M500 240GB SSD

2GB kvr1333d3n9 kingston memory

Ati radeon X1800XL 256MB DDR3 which worked fine in a previous computer.

Viewsonic VP930 DVI

Tagan 480Watt PSU

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1, clean install

Driver: 10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc v. 8.593.100.0

Net framework 4.5 freshly installed

What I have done so far: Net framework wasn't installed, I first installed de Catalyst driver mentioned above on a fresh Win7 install. After the Catalyst installation program analysed everything I had to click on accept. Everything went fine, and you get a warning that the screen may flash etc. After that the screen turned black and the led on the monitor turns orange. Nothing happened. I manually had to reboot the machine. After that I get the message that the Ati driver isn't installed or the driver isn't working properly.

I deinstalled everything, and reinstalled a different version, the catalyst 13-12_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc v Same problem. I deinstalled everything again, and let the AMD Cleanup utility clean everything up this time. Everytime when I boot, the screen is now at 800x600.

After that I installed Net framework 4.5, I gave the 10-2 version another try. Maybe because I'm at 800x600 the screen didn't went black or din't flash, the installation went to the end. But I still got the message that there is no driver installed for my GPU card, so basicly nothing is working, still at the 800x600 screen.

In my previous computer with XP the card was working fine.

Is there an older version which is stable and can be installed properly? I'm not a gamer so I don't care about the latest driver giving the fastest performance or latest bells and whisles, it just needs to do its job.
