Cost is another thing I didn't see mentioned on there as well. I bought my parents a
1920x1080 ASUS branded DVI based monitor for my parents for $179 on ***** and it doesn't look bad at all. Sure it may not have the NTSC gamut coverage of my $329 Samsung or have its crispness in fine details but it cost $150 less, and doesn't have any ghosting.
In reality though if you're smart enough to get a DVI or DisplayPort based monitor they're all going to be about the same if they're TN panels (which most 1920x1200 and below monitors are) aside from the control software they use, especially if they're modern LED backlit panels which really bring out the colors and give a more even brightness coverage (something I may experience someday...). Once you get to the ultra density monitors such as the 27"+ 2560x1600 which are made with the superior IPS or PLS (basically a S-IPS panel) type panels then it gets a bit differentiated, but as far as mainstream TN panels go, it's mostly personal taste.
Also, make sure if you bought a laptop from one of the manufacturers that were sued for price fixing, you go to lcdclass.com and file a claim, they say the minimum payment they're expecting is $25...s...
