OK! I had a little fun. The actual idea is if the microprocessor and RAM were combined into a single package, with heat sink, that could be mounted into a hard drive bay then a second or third etc. etc. etc. combined Processor/RAM unit could added and plugged into the motherboard as required, or desired, to increase speed or data handling capability. One could get a 4 core 4Gig RAM, 4 core 8Gig RAM, 8 core 4Gig RAM, 8 core 8Gig RAM, etc. etc. until they were satisfied with their computers capability. Just think how many graphics cards could be ran if the entire length of the backside of the motherboard could be used for plug in cards. I don't know of any law that requires the processor and RAM to be mounted to the motherboard.

Daughter boards with separate CPU and RAM resources are commonplace in enterprise computing.

Doing something similar with a drive bay unit connected via wire wouldn't work.  While you don't know of any "law", electrical engineers do.

The idea of mounting the combined processor/Ram package in a hard drive bay would work, it would just be slow. The combined processor/RAM package would have to plug directly into the mother board to keep the speed. If the motherboards were to be extended forward so that multiple processor/RAM packages could be plugged in then you could increase speed and add extra RAM Channels. Say for instance one had a 6 core 4gig DDR3 3 channel package the computer could run off of this but you could add a second package and now you would have a 12 core 8gig DDR3 6 channel system etc. etc.. That should save some motherboard path work crowding. Of course the motherboard chip sets would have to be adaptable. This would also require the case manufacturers to move the bays toward the access cover side of the case or set them vertically, to make room for the extension, so that it would still fit in the same size case. 

 

P.S. I have been having some fun with this and also using it to find out how would be assassins treat new people.

Here's a thought!

At present the AMD processors are mounted on a small board with pins protruding out of the bottom. If the board is enlarged so that 3 DDR3 RAM sockets are installed on the board, with all path ways, then all of the RAM pathways are removed from the motherboard. If a nine core processor is installed on the board then each core would have it's own RAM channel. The part of the board with the RAM would be suspended over the motherboard so some type of support would be needed, and probably a different socket design. If three processor/RAM packages are mounted on a motherboard then 9 separate 64 bit channels should be available.

Another possibility is to extend the processor board out both sides, so that two RAM sockets could be mounted on each side of the processor, and to have two each RAM sockets mounted above and below the processor plug on the motherboard. The above configuration should make it possible to have 8 or 12 independent 64 bit busses, depending on if two or three channel RAM is used. How many cores could be used in this configuration? The programming would decide how to use these busses, either ganged or independent, when programs are loaded. If all of the expansion slots on the motherboard that run slower than SATA 3 were removed then the number of pathways on the motherboard could be reduced, along with taking all of the present stuff off of the back of the motherboard and putting it on headers or cards, to make room for more card slots. How fast and realistic could games and graphics become if 4 graphics cards could all run at full speed? 

NOTE: This type of 2 or 3 channel RAM would have to have separate address busses for each channel so each core could operate independently.
