Hi this post suggests AMD wont be releaseing the new 8000 series until 3rd Q this year. http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/video/amds-hd-7000-series-may-stick-around-throughout-2013/ . It may be a long wait for those wanting a new card.

I heard Q4. But that's not such a big deal since nVidia is only releasing the Titan themselves (smells of a handshake agreement between AMD and nVidia to me), and both the 7900 and it's nVidia counterparts have plenty of power. I'd rather see AMD wait and really push out a new product with a number of improvements rather than what they did with the HD 6000 series.

I believe we're largely at the point where more powerful GPU's will provide diminishing returns.  Almost all games are console ports, which means they don't stress even a mid-range gaming PC.  The rare exceptions, like Assassin's Creed III, run poorly due to a lack of CPU power.

Maybe when the next generation of consoles come out, and the bar for game graphics is raised, it'll become relevant again.  For my purposes, I don't see any game that was designed to run on a PS3 or Xbox360 ever demanding more than  pair of 7970's can deliver for a 2560x1600 display.

Rumors say next gen consoles in 2014 will change things, I don't know about that.. Sometimes I force on some SSAA so it atleast looks better than on the consoles and gpu has to do more work as well.
