A public preview of Windows Blue is expected in the next couple of months, according to Mary Jo Foley at our sister site ZDNet. And Blue isn't just the code name for the next version of Windows 8, but also for updates to Windows Phone, Windows Server, and Windows Services, Foley has said.

Win8 will never be installed on any of my systems.

Agreed, Microsoft just needs to come out an say "we screwed up", dump the Live Tile garbage, and go back to a spartan UI. I've got a copy of Windows 8 Pro sitting on my shelf, it'll most likely never get used either.

Windows 8 has a Win7 GUI, it's all still here. You do have to add a Start Button back, but that's no biggie. To those who say the "classic" gui doesn't exist, quit bashing it,and use it. I think you'll find it's al still here.

Also, I personally love the Live tiles, and would HATE to to see them go!

No thanks, it's just a third iteration of Windows Vista, nothing new or innovative in Windows 8 over Windows 7.

Users should not have to either create their own start button or download a third party app to restore it. I know there are articles such as This at Techrepublic and This at Techrepublic to add the start button and a boot to desktop, but it's something which should not have been removed, just like the status bar and HTTPS indicators (the latter of which was put back in a few versions later), though I remember Ubuntu did the same thing with it's UI not to long ago as well and Linux users were screaming about it too. What sense does it make for a company to upgrade their OS when it would, at least for a while, reduce productivity.

But really, name something new or innovative that Windows 8 put in which isn't the ability to natively access disk images (instead of using a program like DAEMON Tools which has been around forever) and isn't the UI (which is just a smartphone UI) which is an essential feature not found in Windows 7. I can think of maybe one, the Instant On feature, but I don't know to many people whose time is so valuable that waiting 15 seconds to boot is going to make a difference.

Something isn't new if its features were already found on another OS or a third party program. They could buy out Who Crashed or CPU-z and integrate it but that would not make them innovative features. New innovations would be things such as a new, more efficient file system to replace NTFS or the ability to run memory, disk and registry error checks in the background (when idle of course) automatically to help catch problems before they start combined with the enterprise level self correcting features which would be of great help to non tech savvy people, and a detriment to Geek Squad I'm sure.

Hi my only problem with everyone adding start menus and other os changes would be support. Example new user installs start menu and what ever other changes then has a problem and wants phone support at this point how can you help if you dont know what he has done to the os. It is fine for users that can fix there own pc but new users need to leave it alone.

The big 'learning curve' and program/driver compatibility is killing Win ate. Most people saw this coming...I know the larger corporations did.

"" As many sites have previously reported, Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) is built into Blue. Neowin noted this past weekend that IE11 may include tab-syncing functionality, which could potentially allow users to sync tabs across Windows Phone and Windows, going forward.

And as my Windows Weekly cohost Paul Thurrott (whose image of the leaked Blue build I've embedded in this post) noted, more and more of the settings that are currently built into the Windows 8 Control Panel (in the Desktop) are going Metro. Thought Microsoft definitely isn't phasing out the Desktop with Blue, it's slowly chipping away at making the Desktop less necessary for its own software and services.

I do wonder what the driving force behind what I think should be called Death To The Desktop movement is? It's like Microsoft moving to the horrid Ribbon UI or Firefox removing the persistent status bar and HTTPS icon, or even games locking settings internally and not allowing driver level overrides. This isn't China or North Korea or any one of the other communist states or dictatorships, what''s wrong with just giving us options?

I have to agree with IL on this. However I will say when I first started using Windows 8, the learning curve was a bit steep. Especially for an older guy like me . My initial reaction was less than favorable. But I really wanted to learn using W8. So after forcing myself to use it a while I started to appreciate some of its features.
In tiled mode, I like having the screen completely filled with information. Great for watching sports replays. I also found through a bit of exploring that the built-in map has some of the best functionality I have ever seen. Soon, I was navigating through the system in both tiled mode and desktop mode quite easily with mouse and keyboard.

W8 also seems to be a bit zippier - at least for me. I know the system loads much faster than my W7 disk.
I will say I have run into some driver issues in Windows 8 - especially for my motherboard (what was I thinking when I bought this board?) but nothing that couldn't be worked around.

Cheers.

It is a faster OS, it's not just you.

Personally, I like the Ribbon, again, faster, more up-front. It's not death to the desktop, it's the desktop rejuvinated.

If you want a "communist" platform, go Apple, no options there. lol, yet sooo many people are flocking to them... why? uggh....!

Now, I will agree, there is a learning curve, but that curve  I think, can be sharply dampened by installing a 3rd party start button, Stardocks is great btw! I'm not going to lie, I think killing the start button was a mistake, and definetly in the camp of "What were they thinking!", but there are work-arounds, and if you can wrap your head around that lemmon, the OS opens itself up to be so much more, quicker, faster, neater, simpler, etc. I really don't understand the friction generated over it. seriosuly, I don't get it.

I am sure you get the idea - Win8, in comparison, is a cheap looking eyesore! .. and, yes, 2D is faster than 3D.

Aha, thought it is metro 8)

..but, sorry, that's just not good enough. No way something like that will be ever on my system. Microsoft should stay away from trying to get back to DOS (2D) ages.
