The Phenom II series is long since discontinued, however the PII X4 965 is still fairly common and can easily overclock to 3.7ghz. But given your current processor and mainstream video card, you wouldn't notice any difference in an extra 100mhz.

Well I am trying to max out this computer so it willl last or be somewhat up to date.I have ordered a 4 port usb 3.0 card and a 2 port sata 6gbs card. and was looking for a better processor for this board. the 955 is a C2, maybe a 965 C3 would be better.

You won't notice any difference, so save your money and put it where you will notice some real speed, like a SSD.

I agree with B_Z.

Sure you can get a Phenom II X4 965 (980 or 97x if you are really lucky), but it won't make much difference.Your CPU is already clocked at 3.6GHz; the Phenom II x4 980 is clocked at 3.7GHz...Your chip should be okay for a few more years.

If you really want to upgrade, you'd need to replace the aged 790FX board and go with a 900 series one (990X, 990FX), and get a 2nd generation FX chip (i.e 6300, 8320, 8350).

With the CPU aside, the Hd 7770 is the weakest link in your system. The Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.6GHz should be able to work fine with a HD 7870 / 7950 / 7970.

The forum layout is messed up for me, so I don't know of my post is set up the way I have it intended...(maybe browser related)

And with Steamroller due out before to much longer and logic would assume AMD would actually release a new chipset this time (not just scratch out the 8 and write in a 9) with PCIe 3.0 support, it'd be better to wait.
