Or I could just spend $60 more, get Windows 8, and have my PC function as a media center as well...In the era of the XBOne and PS4, I can't see SteamOS being much more than a niche.

SteamOS it's self is just another linux distribution that anyone can download, and there have been linux media centers around for at least 10 years now.  I used to run my own MythTV machine which at the time beat the pants off anything you could get from cable companies or find on windows.

We'll have to wait and see just how popular gaming on Linux turns out to be in general, but having their own Linux distro with all the bells and whistles pre-loaded certainly won't hurt.

It could turn out to be a good alternative for parents to give to their kids as their first computer, since many of the issues which plague inexperienced Windows users, such as viruses and malware, are much less common in Linux.
