I suppose they can't be anything but happy.  If you check sites like newegg, they are pretty low on 280x and out of 290s.  It turns out the amd cards kick the nvidia models ass when it comes to kh rates, so people the world over are vacuuming up amd cards to mine for coins.

It seemed to really explode after bitcoin topped 1000 dollars.  That particular cryptocurrency is no longer profitable to mine because of all the ASIC chips dedicated specifically to the SHA-256 types of hashing, but the other types are alive and well for gpus.

I hope you guys have a much better than expected season for gpu sales.  And release more !!  Plenty of people are buying second cards and second rigs for the sole purpose of additional mining capacity.

A sale to a fool looks the same on the balance sheet as any other.

Those fools are giving AMD the best gpu sales ever.  I was waiting on one of the better cooled version of the 290 to release, but seeing as that people are camping sites like newegg and snapping the stock 290s up ultra fast, I might not be able to get ANY cards for awhile until the goldrush dies down.

Meh. I grabbed an HD6750 for $15 on Black Friday to mess around a little with this mining thing. I know that card won't exactly be profitable, but there are many things to mine besides Bitcoin. We'll see.

I'd be so interested in hearing about any people on the forums who are mining.

Another thing--for whatever reason, AMD >> nVidia for mining, but nVidia still >> AMD for folding.

The deal with mining is more about how there's a group of people who treat mining like its a new religion.  That's great for them I guess, but that doesn't make it particularly important to anyone outside that group. If a few people have a new reason to buy an AMD card instead of one from nvidia I'm sure AMD is happy with that, but I doubt they give it much thought beyond that.

Annnnnnnnnnd it looks like amd/newegg has responded to the cryptocurrency craze.

baseline price on reference 290s = 500 dollars

baseline price on reference 290x's = 600 dollars

well, at least amd makes more money now.  their stock is still going down, might be a good time to buy when the gpu sales numbers/profit comes out.

OR it could be that people are grabbing up these very powerful GPUs because there are water blocks available and they need them to drive three or more 1920x1080 displays...
